Get a local SIM card early and set up mobile money; it makes everyday payments far easier. Learn a few words of Krio — people appreciate the effort.

Ask on the community board when you need a recommendation for a doctor, mechanic, school or landlord. Someone has almost certainly been there before you.

And most importantly: come to the events. Community is how home starts to feel like home.
